Jon has participated on numerous HUOA committees since 2000 and continues to be an active member of Chatan-Kadena Chojin Kai and the Young Okinawans of Hawaii. He has also chaired and served on numerous HUOA committees including Fund Development, Membership Benefits, Okinawan Festival Program, Autumn Festival Dance Matsuri, HOC Tenth Anniversary and the Worldwide Uchinanchu Conference. Jon is currently the Supervising Attorney for the Sate of Hawaii, Division of Consumer Advocacy. His grandfather, Jiro Itomura, immigrated to Hawi, Hawaii from Chatan to work as a supervisor in the sugar industry. Grandfather Shinyei Shimabukuro was from Ishikawa and while successfully running a local downtown restaurant, was one of the seven men who journeyed across the Pacific with over 500 pigs for post-war Okinawa. Jon participated in the 1999 Okinawa Leadership Tour and witnessed the spectacular Worldwide Uchinanchu Taikai in 2001 and 2006. He enjoys the opportunity to perform shishimai, drop andagi, learn Eisa and sanshin, construct Okinawan Eisa drums, sew hapi coats and meet so many new faces through the Young Okinawans of Hawaii and HUOA. Jon's mom, Eleanor, wife Darlene and sons Dane and Joel have been very supportive in allowing him to continue promoting and perpetuating the Uchinanchu spirit and serving as HUOA's President for 2008.
