| 2008 HUOA Vice President: PAUL KOMEIJI |

Paul is a first generation “Okinawan at heart” as his grandparents immigrated from different areas of Japan to work as laborers on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island. His paternal grandparents, Risuke and Motome Komeiji, came from Yamanashi Ken in the early 1900's. Paul's maternal grandfather, Kojiro Okamoto arrived in 1896 from Yamaguchi Ken. Paul's maternal grandmother, Kame (Kono) immigrated from Hiroshima Ken to Waimea, Kauai in 1913. Although they initially worked on the plantations, Paul's grandparents later established and managed businesses in the Aala Rengo Business District.
Paul’s “Okinawan roots” can be traced through his wife, Kristi. Kristi's paternal grandparents - Kamesuke Miyasato immigrated from Misato Mura, Aza Yogi in 1912 to assist in the management of a co-op store on Kauai. Kamesuke's wife, Kama (Arakaki) immigrated in 1907 from Naha with his wife, Kami Oshiro, following in 1914. Kamekichi worked as a Supervisor at the Waipahu plantation. After leaving the plantation, Kami studied English and attained her United States citizenship. Kristi's maternal grandparents, Tokumatsu Koike and Kiyo (Honda), immigrated from Niigata Ken in the early 1900's. Tokumatsu acted as a community secretary by helping individuals communicate with their families in Japan.
Paul is a member of the Aza Yogi Doshi Kai. He is the son of Jane and the late Toshio Komeiji. Over the years, Paul has been the co-chairman of the Country Store and Security/Parking for the Okinawan Festival and chairman of the HUOA Communication and Information Committee. His interest in the Okinawan culture has come from his wife, Kristi and her family. “I believe that HUOA’s goals are important for helping my children, who are part Okinawan, understand their culture and heritage. Although I’m not Okinawan, I have become ‘Okinawan at heart’ and want to contribute to this organization.”
Paul currently is the President of Kuhana Associates, LLC, a Native Hawiian Organization Owned business. He and Kristi have three children, Trevor, Kiana and Shane.
