CHILDRENS CULTURAL DAY CAMP SET FOR JUNE 11-15
Applications are now being accepted for the sixth annual HUOA Childrens Cultural Day Camp, Warabi Ashibi Children at Play, set for June 11-15 at the Hawaii Okinawa Center. The highly successful program for youngsters 8 to 13 years old was developed in 1995 by HUOA staffer Karen Kuba-Hori. Warabi Ashibi Children at Play introduces young children and teens to the Okinawan cultural heritage in a fun environment.
The week-long program begins at 9 a.m. and wraps up at 2:30 p.m.
Among the planned activities are: Okinawan cooking, Okinawan music and dance, paranku drumming and drum-making, ikebana, raku pottery-making, Okinawan textile-making, old-time plantation games, Okinawa/Japanese arts and crafts, Uchinaaguchi (Okinawan language), and more.
The registration fee is $50 for one child, $95 for two, and $140 for three children. To qualify for the multiple-child discount, children must come from the same household. The registration fee covers supplies, a camp T-shirt, an excursion fee and a supervised overnight sleep-over at the Hawaii Okinawa Center. Enrollment is limited to the first 50 children who apply; the leader-to-child ratio is one leader to 10 children.
Adults and high school students are also being sought to serve as volunteer leaders. Training will be provided.
Call Karen Kuba-Hori at 676-5400 to volunteer, or for more information.
