Dorene Niibu

Dorene Niibu Dorene is a member of Aza Gushikawa Doshi Kai and has served in all positions on their executive board. She is the granddaughter of the late Kamado and Matsu Tengan (founder of Tahara Block - an Okinawan hollow tile business) of Aza Gushikawa (yago-Taharagwa) and the late Kayo Ikehara and Matsu Miyahira (founding member of Kauai United Okinawan Kenjin Kai, predecessor of Hui Alu) from Kauai. Dorene credits her parents, Takeo and Dora Tengan, and grandparents for her love of Uchinanchu music and odori. She and husband, Clayton, have three adult children: Claire-Ann (Art) Akau, Christie (Eddy) Fong and Paul Niibu and seven beautiful grandchildren. She is currently employed as secretary to the Manoa Budget Director at the University of Hawaii and is also on the executive board of the UH Administrative Support Association. She serves as the treasurer for the Jikoen Hongwanji Mission and the Honolulu Hongwanji Council. She is a member of the Jikoen Buddhist Women's Association and the Jikoen Karaoke Club (Marion Arakaki sensei). She is very grateful for the many lessons learned and friendships made when she assisted with various events through all of these organizations and HUOA. She looks forward to future challenges and the ongoing support from family and friends.
