| HUOA Legacy Award Hawaii United Okinawa Association honors distinguished individuals for their outstanding achievements and contributions to our Uchinanchu and Hawaii communities. They have applied the essence of such endearing Okinawan expressions as chimugukuru and yuimaaruu. As leaders and cultural masters, our honorees have performed meritorious services that have enriched our lives and improved the welfare of our communities. Hui O Laulima Cultural Grants Hui O Laulima has provided grants to individuals and organizations in our local Okinawan community with the greatest potential for the preservation, promotion, and perpetuation of the Okinawan culture. | Okinawa Prefectural Government Junior Study Tour Junior Study Tour Dates: July 15 to 28, 2009 The OPG Junior Study Tour program invites junior high school students from around the world to participate in a two week study tour. In 2009, only six participants nominated by Okinawan kenjinkai across North America (including Hawaii) are invited, with the remainder spots open to those from other countries. HUOA received a request from OPG to nominate one student. To apply, students must be between 15-17 years of age whose parents are members of a HUOA Club. Additional qualifications apply. The final selection of participants will be made by OPG. |

Okinawa Prefectural Government Scholarship Application Okinawan Prefectural Government offers a scholarship for young persons of Okinawan descent an opportunity to learn about Okinawan culture and other subjects of interest so that they can return to their communities and share what they have learned and experienced. Selected individuals will study at University of the Ryukyus or the Okinawan Prefectural Art Institute (Geidai). This annual award includes air transportation, tuition, books, room and board. Okinawa Prefecture Home Stay Opportunity Program dates: June 17-27, 2009 Another opportunity to learn and experience Okinawa - Okinawa Prefectural Government's Home Stay Program seeks to prompt two-way exchange activities between young Okinawan and young Okinawan descendents overseas through home stay. This program seeks to promote international understanding within the prefecture, revitalize Uchina communities abroad, and develop the worldwide Uchina-network. If you are a student younger than 25 in high school or college and would like to apply for a home stay in Okinawa, please download and complete the application. |
