US CENSUS BUREAU TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Testing and Recruiting Session January 6, 2010 begins at 1:00 pm Serikaku Chaya at Hawaii Okinawa Center
Counting each person residing in the United States—regardless of whether they are U.S. citizens or non-citizens—is one of the largest operations the federal government undertakes. The Census Bureau will hire about 1.4 million temporary employees to do the job. You can be one of them. The Hawaii U.S. Census team is looking for new hires for positions like census takers, crew leaders, crew leader assistants, recruiting assistants, and census clerks.
The Census is particularly seeking out bilingual speakers. To apply, you will have to take a basic skills test that includes reading, following written instructions, basic math and map reading. A practice session for the test will be available and you may take the employment test afterwards.

As HUOA's former Sports Coordinator, Dana Takahara-Dias coordinated HUOA's softball, volleyball and bowling leagues for many years. Both of Dana's parents are of Okinawan decent: the Oshiro family is from Nishihara and the Takahara family is from Oroku.
The game's corporate sponsor, First Hawaiian Bank, is generously giving HUOA four minutes of halftime to present a quick energetic Okinawan eisa or shishimai to get the crowd reared for the second half. For those of you going to the game, we encourage you to wear green shirts and most importantly, wear something purple on your head to show your Uchinanchu Pride as well! |

Hawaii-Okinawa Student Exchange Program The Hawaii-Okinawa Student Exchange Program was established by the State Legislature and the Department of Education in 1990 to provide students with the opportunity to learn first hand about the culture of Okianwa, foster and sustain good relationships and cultural exchanges, and create global awareness and a sense of internationalism in today's youth. Host a Home-Stay Student from Okinawa Deadline to apply: December 17, 2009 The Program invites 25 Oahu students and their families to host one or two students from Okinawa with a home-stay and visitation to their schools from February 27 - March 10. The Okinawa students will travel to the Big Island from March 10 - 12. The ability to speak Japanese is not a requirement. Travel to Home-Stay in Okinawa Deadline to apply: March 11, 2010 A maximum of 25 students statewide will be selected to participate in home-stay in Okinawa scheduled for June 4 - 19, 2010. Students are responsible for their airfare of approximately $1,200 and any personal incidentals. All accommodations, meals and ground transportation in Okinawa will be provided by the Okinawan government and/or host family. The ability to speak Japanese is not a requirement. Oahu students who are planning to apply are encouraged to volunteer to host an Okinawan student when the Okinawan students visit Hawaii to receive priority status to go to Okinawa.
