Ikuyu Madin building from generation to generation Capital campaign by Hawaii United Okinawa
Association Ikuyu Madin - building from generation to generation
When the first 26 Okinawan immigrants set foot in Hawaii, they carried their
Okinawan homeland within their hearts, bridging the gulf between the two island
states with a sense of community that would eventually be woven into the fabric
of Hawaiian society. Their pride and determination were instrumental in helping
to lay the foundation of a uniquely Okinawan community in Hawaii, one of which
would, nearly a half century later, give birth to the Hawaii United Okinawa
Association. Their legacy lives today, stronger than ever, embodied in an
organization whose very purpose mirrors that of the pioneering immigrants who
began arriving in Hawaii in 1900, the perpetuation of Okinawan culture and the
preservation of close ties with their ancestral land.
In the Spirit of Uchinanchu
We need to raise $2,100,000 in 2008 to complete Phase 1 In the Spirit of
Uchinanchu HUOA's vision for the future is embodied in our new Ikuyu Madin
campaign, the focus of which is the to meet the present and future expanding
needs of our organization. In turn, this will enable the organization to further
preserve our Okinawan community here in Hawaii; strengthen the ties with our
Okinawan homeland; provide much needed additional parking; and be able to
provide space for cultural classes, performing arts, language and children's
education and international student exchange programs.
Issei, Nisei, Sansei, Yonsei and Beyond Together, building on past strengths and
achievements, we must act in unity to fulfill our dreams in honor of previous
generations and in promise to those that lie ahead. According to the Okinawan
proverb, shikinoo chui shiihii shiru kurasuru, we will greatly enhance our
shared way of life, now and for generations to come.
