The Hokule'a arrived in Itoman around 1 a.m. Okinawa time on Tuesday (around 6 a.m. Monday morning Hawaii time). Their trip to Okinawa was very challenging as they battled a wide array of harsh elements including gale force winds, freezing cold, rough seas and even days with absolutely no wind and extreme heat.
David and I will be in Itoman on Wednesday to participate with the Welcoming Ceremony coordinated by the Okinawan Prefectural Government. Dave will be giving an address on behalf of HUOA! Tonight, the crew will also be having a dinner with people who are living here but are from Hawaii. I'm looking forward to saying hi to my friend Kana Uchino, who is from Okinawa, living in Kaneohe and working on Coconut Island in Kaneohe Bay. This was a dream come true for her to train and be part of this leg of the trip to Okinawa.
